The overarching aims of the English skills for scientists course and complementary science lecture are as follows:

  1. To provide an introduction to the study of science in English.
  2. To help students acquire the necessary confidence, language, and academic skills to engage with high school level science in English.
  3. To provide a bridge between the type of teaching/learning at high school and that at university.
  4. To engage students with new ideas and design stimulating activities for students to perform in a mutually supportive environment.
Course image General English
2014 Undergraduates

General English is a course that focuses on developing communications skills in English. This includes enabling students to discuss a variety of topics, to read and engage with academic texts, develop listening skills to acquire important information, and to recognise and produce cohesive writing at the paragraph level.  The topics selected are approached from both a general and scientific perspective.

The overarching aims of the General English course are as follows:

  1. To provide students with opportunities to gain confidence in speaking English.
  2. To provide students with opportunities to gain confidence in listening to English.
  3. To introduce students to features of English texts to improve both writing and reading skills.
  4. To equip students with the grammatical knowledge and vocabulary acquisition skills necessary to study independently in English.

This course is a continuation of the introductory physics course you took last semester.

The focus of this course is:

  • Understanding simple electric circuits.
  • Introduction to electricity and magnetism.
  • Understanding light: geometric optics, interference, and diffraction.
  • Introduction to some advanced topics, including quantum mechanics and nuclear physics.
